Investigated Problem- War is currently being understood as an actual, intentional and widespread armed conflict between two political entities or communities. So, conflicts between people or gangs do not count as a war. Because of this, war is a unique phenomenon between two states or one that intends to become a state. However, certain terrorist organizations can easily be considered political entities or communities because they are associations of people with a common political goal and most are likely to indeed aspire to statehood or influence the development of statehood in certain lands. (Orend)
The causes of war largely depend on the person’s view of free will and determinism. When war is claimed to not be in the hands of the person, the war becomes a fated fact of the universe, one that humanity cannot challenge. The implication of this theory and idealization is that man is not responsible for his actions and hence not responsible for war. This ideology of war comes from a claim of strong determinism for reasons of war. Theorists also came up a theory of war for weak determinism, in which mankind is a product of his environment but he also possesses the power to change that environment. There is other theories in which emphasize man’s freedom of choice and that war is a product of decisions and hence is the responsibility of the person. (Moseley) War can also be manipulated and mislead others from its actual purpose. Propagandas has been common throughout history, and come in different forms. Using selective stories, partial facts, and demonizing the enemy are a couple of common tactics used within propaganda. The use of propaganda is also used to incite the public into agreeing with having war. (Shah) There are those who see war as a tool to show that they are correct, to take over something, or to simply annihilate a certain group or entity of people. Machiavellian and draconian methods are often used to not only disguise the truth behind war but to encourage the public to go along with the war for their gain. However, others see war as unpreventable due to human nature and our constant curiosity for the greater unknown. For the pacifist, they see no moral grounds to justify the need for war. Michael Walzer contends that pacifism’s idealism is overly optimistic. In other words, pacifism lacks realism. The nonviolent world imagined by the pacifist is not actually attainable. While we are mostly dedicated to morality during war, it’s hard to concede that in the real world, there are things to justify for war. It is pretty hard to see how anything but war could’ve defeated the Nazis. Another problem to pacifism is the lack of resisting international aggressions, and ends up building the aggression and failing to protect the people who need it. North Korea Pushes For Nuclear Weapons From the capital of Pyongyang, Kim Jong Un urges his different scientists and nuclear physicists to work harder to produce the almighty Nuclear Bomb. For years and years, Kim Jong Un has dreamed of using the coveted weapons to destroy its enemy, South Korea, and ruling the entire vast world under the North Korean flag. Dae-Jung, a top military official who used to work under the Korean dictator has escaped from the nation, reported that Kim Jong Un loved throwing money into the research and forcing possibly thousands of different scientists and researchers into pain staking research for it. Kim Jong Un is like a well-oiled machine, perfectly capable of using his country's money. His recent Ebay purchases includes a used Houston Rockets basketball, Michael Jordan t-shirt, and uranium-235. His people are happy that he is purchasing these items, and are willing to live in dirt shacks any day for him. "I don't care about my dirty home as long as Kim Jong Un has the things he want, i'm happy." says Hyeoyun Park. But that is not the only thing Kim Jong un has shown the world. He has previously proven to the world that he does have missiles – atomic missiles that have a range of 5 feet and 2 inches and is not afraid to use it. He often says that South Korea is too scared to even approach the North Korean border, claiming that the handmade grenades and small atomic bombs are what scared them away. General Dong-Min agrees, stating that the work of the North Korean research team is even better than the USA. “I believe that our military and military tactics are highly superior to those of United States, as we have not seen them approach us with war” says another right hand general of Kim Jong Un. He is seen later carrying a stash of cash in his hands given to him by the North Korean dictator. The citizens of the nation in the Korean peninsula agree wholeheartedly that North Korea is supreme, and that Kim Jong Un is god. Kim Jong Un says that the people love him and his plans to make war with the inferior nations of South Korea and United States. He says his thoughts and opinions are synchronized with the citizens of North Korea although they are a massive minority compared to him. Propaganda has not been needed in Kim Jong Un’s campaign to build nuclear weapons and nuke the inferior countries. Claims have been brought up that suggest that the people didn’t need to say anything, they agreed from within their hearts and minds. With a dial-up internet with only four mbps and a computer from the 90’s, one can say that Kim Jong Un is prepared for anything. His researchers have already accomplished so much already, including the plans for a rocket that may or may not hit USA, but instead the Pacific Ocean. He says that it is highly impossible that it will hit the Pacific Ocean, and that any organisms that die from it, gets to die in peace knowing that they died from a nuke created by the Leader, himself. Many people have questioned his regime and his plans for nuclear weapons. Where does he even get this money from? Well according to sources, he generates money from his money trees. “People will always be hating on him, but Kim Jong Un is going to nuke you and then maybe you won’t laugh at him anymore” says local resident Dae Hyun. -Reported live at the capital of North Korean, Pyongyang- Robby Chandra of the Daily News Reflections- I chose this issue because it is one of the most common things within our society that has existed since the beginnings of mankind. People often do have different views of war, but I see war as un-necessary unless it is reacting to an international aggression or for the safety of a group of people. War has so many consequences tied with it, including the deaths of many soldiers and the moral ground that we try to use to justify our reasoning for attacking one and another. I used North Korea’s ignorance of nuclear weapons, technology and rampant urge to attack nations as a way to mask my true argument. The audience of my satire is people who can see the major consequences that war brings upon anybody, and especially nuclear bombs, in which can forever change mankind and the environment. People are who especially ignorant or do not see the issues in war will not understand this satire. I also used a newspaper article for my satire as I saw it being portrayed more easily for shown through newspaper. My response completely satirizes the topic of war because it pokes fun at a major topic such as war, and it uses a light, sarcastic tone to help describe and shows the actions of a bellicose dictator such as Kim Jong Un. I used irony (Kim Jong Un’s inferior technology to be able to attack United States and South Korea without any problems), hyperbole (Kim Jong Un is worshipped as a god and can grow money from money trees) and an oxymoron (massive minority). "Josh followed Flame through the door... and immediately stopped, frozen in shock. Scatty was standing in the center of the narrow corridor, her two short swords a blur before her. Behind the swords, crowding the corridor, were some of the most terrifying creatures he had ever seen. He'd been expecting monsters; what he had not been expecting were creatures even more terrifying. Creatures that were neither beast nor human, but something caught in between. Humans with the head of cats snarled and slashed at Scatty, their claws striking sparks off her swords. Others with the bodies of men but with the huge peaked skulls of ravens jabbed at her, attempting to gouge and stab her. " Punctuation/Sentence Length: The author used the ellipses because the dramatic pause was necessary before the character continued on with his action. Without the punctuation in the passage, the meaning and tone of the passage would be less fluid and changed nearly drastically. The author's uses of the semi-colon was good, as it helped to expand the sentences. Because of the extended uses of the details in the passage, the author was pressed to use complex and compound sentences to get his thoughts out. The amount of words in a sentence varied, from having around 6 words to about 18 words. Devices: The author's use of repetition and parallelism was quite limited in this passage. Fragments of sentences are similar to the way the author has written his sentences in this particular passage, as he uses the comma to make more sentences that are based off the last sentence. There are a lot of dependent clauses within these sentences that suggest that the author is extending and using dependent clauses after the main big independent clause. Sentence Beginnings: The author has not used many introductory clauses in his passage. Evaluate: The syntax in this passage makes it not only easier to read, but also beautiful to read. The different ways the author decided to use, made it more interesting because of the different ways its been written. How To Date Your Mom-Ian Frazier 1. Now at first glance, this piece of work made me uncomfortable because of the title and how i presumed that this piece of work would be about incest. I found out later that this was not true, and that the entire piece of work was a satire in which continued to make fun of the fact that we almost never compliment our mothers. This piece of work can be interpreted differently, and it may be at first hard to analysis due to the amount of hyperboles used to show an opinion in this piece of work. It is funny at certain points in the passage. The author was definitely intent on showcasing a piece of work that was to not be taken seriously as given in the following passage, "Ideally, i would like a mom about nineteen feet or twenty feet tall...". From where this passage was taken out of, the author was trying to show his viewpoint as a little child or a baby even. 2. Yes, it is in fact a satirical piece of work because of the tone of the author in the story and also the exaggeration given by the hyperboles. The description in the last paragraph, the afterword, does not seem to be realistic. This piece of work is making fun of how teenagers almost now never compliment their mothers. Due to society and how we view certain things, most people (including myself) assumed that this title was of a sexual meaning. But that is not entirely true because nothing in the passage actually said anything sexual. I do not know understand the paragraph where the author said that we should abandon our fathers and tell them to get their own mothers, but i believe the author may have used this paragraph to show a more comedic tone of voice in the passage. How to Write about Africa-Binyavanga Wainaina 1. This piece of work is a satire because of its sarcastic tone and its mocking of the way other people and societies see Africa. The author in who created this satire intended to make fun of those who portray Africa as such in the story, 'pretending' to give advice on how to write about Africa. Its actually quite obvious, and in many times in the passage, the author uses humor to lighten up the passage such as "Your African characters may include naked warriors, loyal servants, diviners and seers, ancient wise men living in hermitic splendour. Or corrupt politicians, inept polygamous travel-guides, and prostitutes you have slept with. The Loyal Servant always behaves like a seven-year-old and needs a firm hand; he is scared of snakes, good with children, and always involving you in his complex domestic dramas." The passage itself makes fun of the typical African stereotype that Africa is a poor continent that will always need help from western countries. Alongside that, Wainaina uses these funny scenes from her satire to make fun of the images that people typically have of Africa. High School Students Demand Wars in Easier-To-Find Countries- This piece of work is also a satire and what qualifies it as a satire is the fact that it took a serious topic, such as education, and made it funny and offensive. The author of this satire really wanted to tackle the fact that American students are falling behind and not very good in subjects such as geography. Not only is it world geography but also worldly affairs. The author makes it very clear that young people nowadays are unaware of whats actually going on outside of the country. The author used hyperboles and an understatement. "Since the anti-terror war began, most of my students can now point to Afghanistan on a map, which is fine, but those same kids still don't know the capitals of Nevada and Ohio," said Richard Gerber, who teaches at Rhymony High School in Atlanta. "I think we need to cut back on our activities overseas and take care of business at home, and if that means invading Tallahassee (Fla.) or Trenton (N.J.) so that students learn where they are, so be it." Miss Kindergarten America- Carol Schacter This piece of work by Carol Schacter is a satire because of how it is making fun of how certain girls are being forced into these beauty pagents and being made aware of their looks and of fashion in general rather than playing and doing normal activities that other children do. The main idea that i think Schacter was trying to portray was that the little girls should be able to enjoy a normal life and not a dolled up life or to have to think about their make-up or beauty all the time. "She undressed and stood at the mirror, looking at her figure. When she had reached the semifinals, she had stopped eating cookies and ice cream and started smoking." Not only that, but Schacter also portrays the little girl to be able to do adult-like activities so i believe that parody and hyperbole is being used to exaggerate certain details in this satire. |
