As stated before, these two novels both have magical realism, but to a certain extent. While reading this, I realize that Marquez uses magical realism in a more serious plot and uses it to have a big impact on the plot, while “Like Water for Chocolate” didn’t use too much, as it only had a limited influence on the plot. In Marquez’s novel, the sensory details help to describe and paint an image of the scenario whenever magical realism occurs. Also, Marquez likes to have long, complicated sentences that string together consecutively. This in turn creates an event all in one sentence or two, as the entire length isn’t affected by the amount of sentences, but rather by the amount of words. The punctuation does not affect neither novels, however the setting does affect the plot at times for both novels, as the setting usually holds an event in the book with a certain meaning or connotation. In “Like Water for Chocolate”, the characters strongly controlled the plot, as the plot continues only when the characters continue. Usually, novels with magical realism often either side with realism and a slight influence from magic or vice versa. This can often deter readers if this is not what they expected to read. Now, Marquez’s novel has a pretty detailed plot while sometimes “Like Water for Chocolate” has these subtle plot changes. These are the mere differences and similarities that these two pieces of work have as of right now.

Your comparison was very clear in the way you could directly see the differences and similarities made between the two stories. However, I would have to disagree with you on some points. You said that "Like Water for Chocolate" didn't use too much magical realism, but I have to say that I noticed magical realism occurring so often throughout the novel it got a little confusing and sometimes annoying at times. For me I felt like both stories heavily used magical realism but it was expressed a little bit more dramatically in "Like Water for Chocolate". Other than that I think the rest of your comparison was on point, but there could have been a little more.

I believe that your essay was very vague and you didn't provide any evidence to back up any of your claims. Make sure next time to place a bigger emphasis in focusing on what message your trying to get across to the readers.
